2019-2020 Park Tool School Classes

Learn how to fix your own bicycle with Summit City Bicycles & Fitness's Tim Wegner and Park Tool. Tim can teach you everything from how to change a flat tire to more advanced bicycle repair. Learn basic repair skills on your own bicycle, like how to adjust a rear derailleur or how to lube a chain, and much more. With small class sizes and hands-on instruction, you too can learn how to tune your bicycle.

Intro to Bike Maintenance

This course will teach you about your new bicycle or about your current bike. Topics include: Wheel Installation, cleaning, lubrication, and a pre ride checklist. This course will give you enough information to make your riding more enjoyable and allow you to ride more intelligently by knowing how your bike works.

Cost: Free

Dates: Scheduled as needed.

Class size limited to four students.

Elite Class

This course covers a wide range of topics in depth. After completing this class, participants will have a wide variety of essential bike maintenance skills. Areas of study include: derailleurs, brakes, wheel truing, bearing adjustments, on trail/road repairs, bike cleaning, and lubrication.

The BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is required for this class.

Cost: $360

Dates: Saturday, January 4, Saturday, January 11, Saturday, January 18, & Saturday, January 25, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Class size limited to three students.

Beginner Class

This course covers a wide range of topics with less detail than the Elite Class. Basic skills are covered (wheel installation, lubrication, cleaning, tool usage, fixing a flat) as well as more advanced skills such as adjusting brakes and derailleurs, and basic wheel truing.

The BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is required for this class.

Cost: $180

Dates: Monday, January 6, Monday, January 13, & Monday, January 20, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., or Wednesday, February 5, Wednesday, February 12, & Wednesday, February 19, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Class size limited to three students.

Brake Clinic

This course will cover the specific braking system that is on your bike. Cost is dependent on whether your brakes are mechanical or hydraulic, due to the materials involved. Topics will include the inspection, adjustment, and maintenance of brake cables (or brake fluid), brake levers, and brake pads. 

The BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is recommended, but not required for this class.

Cost: $40 (Mechanical) or $100 (Hydraulic)

Dates: Monday, January 27, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. (Mechanical) or Wednesday, February 26, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. (Hydraulic)

Class size limited to three students.

Flat Tire Clinic

This course will teach you how to properly change a flat tire. You will learn wheel removal and installation, as well as inner tube and tire replacement. The class will also cover what you will need to know in order to successfully change a tire out on the road or trail. 

Cost: $20

Class size limited to four students.

Drivetrain Clinic

This course covers the drive train adjustments and service of the crankset, pedals, chainrings, chain, cassette, shift levers, cables, front and rear derailleur, but does not cover any bearing adjustments.

The BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is required for this class.

Cost: $140

Dates: Wednesday, January 8, & Wednesday, January 15, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., or Monday, February 10, & Monday, February 17, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Class size limited to three students.

Rear Shifting Class

This course will cover the rear derailleur and rear shifting. Limitation screws, compatibility, indexing shifting adjustment, hanger alignment and troubleshooting are all covered, as well as chain and cassette wear.

The BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is recommended, but not required for this class.

Cost: $40

Dates: Saturday, December 28, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  & Saturday, February 26, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Class size limited to four students.

Notes

  • Tools needed for the classes will be provided.  If you have tools, you are encouraged to bring them and use them.  Tim can also evaluate and inspect what you do have and make recommendations as to what you might need.
  • This is hands-on.  Bring old clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.
  • Each student will work on their own bicycle so Tim can teach you about the technology and intricacies of your bicycle.
  • The textbook (BBB-3 Park Tool Big Blue Books of Bicycle Repair) can be purchased for a reduced price of $18.75 (25% off). Note-taking is encouraged but the textbook covers the skills you will learn and more.
  • Students will need to arrive 20 minutes early for the first class to fill out a registration form and to allow Tim time to inspect your bicycle.
  • Class size is very limited to allow personal instruction and a more hands on experience.  
  • A special discount on tools and any parts needed is also included.
  • Special class times can be arranged.  Please call Tim Wegner to schedule a time that would work for you.
  • Students under the age of 18 must have parental/guardian consent.
  • Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult
